In November of 2008, three years of funding was awarded by the Ontario Trillium Foundation to the Seniors Community Association to conduct the “Connecting London Seniors… Neighbourhood by Neighbourhood” project. The Glen Cairn community was the first neighbourhood to be approached and over the course of about six months, five different discussion groups were held with seniors across the neighbourhood.

On October 27/09, a Community Meeting was held at the Pond Mills Library to release the findings of the Glen Cairn Community Report. The report summarized the feedback received from Glen Cairn seniors. One of the main concerns raised was the lack of a central community gathering place. Access to information also emerged early as one of the key areas Glen Cairn seniors would like to see addressed. A telling quote from one of the first discussion groups was as follows: “I think we come back to information and before we can say what we need, we need to be fully aware of what we’ve got.” Clearly, participants cared deeply about their community and offered many great suggestions that will benefit seniors in the future.

The process of asking a broad range of people to come out and talk to one another is as valuable as the information first shared. People tend to associate with those they know and have always had contact with, so the new relationships started through the discussion groups will help to foster a broader sense of community and opportunities to work together. As more and more people hear about the project and read the report, it is hoped that they will be inspired to get involved and pursue activities that will make their neighbourhood more “Age- Friendly”. Already a broad range of Glen Cairn seniors have come forward and indicated their willingness to help out and learn more and everyone is welcome! For more information on the Connecting London Seniors project or to receive a copy of the Glen Cairn Community Report, please call Jean Knight, Project Coordinator, at 519-963-4567.
