Beware of 'grandparent scam'

By JOE BELANGER, The London Free Press

Police are urging elderly people across the region to beware of a so-called 'grandparent scam' that's seen people lose thousands of dollars to fraudsters.

Over the last few weeks, OPP and police in every city of Southwestern Ontario have issued news alerts about the scam in recent weeks where someone contacts an elderly person and tells them a grandchild is in trouble and needs money.

The caller is either pretending to be the relative, a friend of the relative or even a lawyer, police say., "It's widespread, not just across the Western Region, but the province," said OPP Sgt. Dave Rektor, media relations office for the region.
